Kyoto + Tokyo/Hakone, Japan — the best C-to-A test
A generic C trip is easy here, and an A trip requires real expertise:
- Logistics complexity: Shinkansen, JR vs. regional passes, reservations, luggage forwarding — DIY gets this wrong.
- Huge quality variance: business hotel vs. machiya vs. ryokan with kaiseki + private onsen. Same city, totally different trip.
- Seasonality / crowds: sakura, autumn foliage, Golden Week — timing + temple crowd strategy makes or breaks it.
- Cultural depth: tea ceremony, temple after-hours, private guide in Gion/Arashiyama, day trips to Nara/Uji — where an agent upsells from bus tour to insider access.
- Pitfalls: language barrier, etiquette, sold-out experiences.
★ C = rushed Golden Route bus tour. A = same budget-ish, but timed, placed, and guided right.
